I remember being extraordinarily moved by this film when it came out. Perhaps too much so. The "hero" of the film was in fact a hero to me in some weird way, though, as has been subsequently pointed out (after Wenders dissed "Do the Right Thing" at Cannes) that it was hard to see what was heroic about someone who escaped his problems via masturbation.<p>

HOWEVER, that's perhaps not true. He is freaky in his extremes but he is also engaged in a difficult struggle. He is still young, perhaps the third youth (post college, pre-settled).
